Nutrition
At Rainbows End Preschool we believe that healthy eating promotes good learning and play in all children.
Our menus provide a wide range of well balanced, nutritious, and healthy meals which help children to try new tastes and build a strong and positive relationship with food.
Being engaged positively with food, learning why some food stuffs are good for us or not, and the effects they have on our bodies, gives children the knowledge to make positive choices and enjoy mealtimes. We highlight the importance of the positive effects of eating well upon all areas of children’s development, and how good healthy eating habits are directly translated into a healthy, happy and confident child. At Rainbow’s End we give children the opportunity to try a range of food stuffs with different textures and tastes to allow them to strengthen mouth and face muscles which in turn helps with speech and language development.
Mealtimes at Rainbow’s End Preschool are a key feature of the day, being both enjoyable and educational. We offer a healthy snack at mid-morning time, comprising of milk or water to drink, with a seasonal fruit and vegetable selection, followed by a savoury protein/calcium/ carbohydrate addition, such as bread muffins with cheese, or bread sticks sand dips, or crumpets with jam. Lunchtime is a hot meal with pudding and water to drink. Our rolling menus ensure that they are well balanced, providing meat, fish and vegetable options and the meals are cooked on site, so they are always guaranteed to be fresh and hot. Tap water is available at all times throughout the day.
We work closely with parents to ensure that individual dietary requirements are met, including food intolerances and allergies, and our rotating menus which change termly ensure that a varied and interesting meal is offered, often reflecting the seasonal and cultural calendar.
The meals provide structure by sitting at the table with peers and encourage independence by allowing children to use cutlery, serve themselves and clear away. This natural break in the day is a pivotable part of the daily routine and sets them up nutritionally for the afternoon ahead.
